We have worked with Javier and his farm Miramundo for quite some time, but the quality has been inconsistent year to year and haven't been able to bring it to Canada with any consistency. In the past couple of years, the quality has really shot up and the consistency has been there. The quality improvements and consistency are directly linked to Luis Pedro taking over the farm. He’s so knowledgeable and meticulous with the farm management - happy plants = better coffee!
Miramundo is owned by Javier Fernández and is located near the town of Pueblo Nuevo Viñas, Santa Rosa. Although Javier is keen on the coffee produced, it is actually managed by my longtime friend and coffee farmer supreme, Luis Pedro Zelaya.. This farm is huge - the overall size is 315 hectares, but the coffee farm itself is just 28 hectares. The rest is a beautiful natural forest.
Santa Rosa is a relatively unexplored coffee region in Guatemala. It’s in the south, sandwiched between the pacific ocean and the border with El Salvador. The farm is surrounded by lots of vegetation and it’s called “Miramundo” because of its view (Miramundo means View of the world in Spanish). On a clear day, you can see the pacific ocean from the top of the farm.
The main varieties are bourbon, caturra and catuaí, although this lot is strictly bourbon. Just like all of Luis Pedro’s farms, the agricultural management is rigorous: it includes tissue management (pruning and suckering), plant nutrition (soil and foliar analysis), pest and disease control and strict shade management.
