Romantic Roast
Chocolate | Caramel | Toasted Almond
Iconoclastic. Everlasting.
Death From Above 1979, the boundary pushing musical alliance created by Sebastien Grainger and Jesse F. Keeler, roared out of Toronto with the uncompromising one-two punch of 2002’s fuzz-bomb EP Heads Up and 2004’s epochal debut album You’re a Woman, I’m a Machine. Their follow up LP, The Physical World, came 10 years later in 2014 (don’t ask!), followed by Outrage! Is Now in 2017 and finally Is 4 Lovers in 2021.
Their live show is a world class high sound-pressure smash fest that hasn’t seemed to lose "that thing" after 20 years. How do they do it? Coffee. What coffee? This coffee. Phil & Sebastian + Death From Above 1979’s “Romantic Roast”. That’s it. That’s the secret.

The Coffee
This coffee keeps the wheels turning and the amps burning on endless tours. The Death From Above 1979 bus is equipped with a Mochamaster brewer, and this is the coffee that hits the road with them each time. It’s an excellent representation of the profile - each cup blasting bold flavours of chocolate, caramel, and toasted almond.
We have small-holder farmers in the Chimaltenango region of Guatemala to thank for this coffee. The remote villages of this region are primarily inhabited by an indigenous population (speaking the Kaqcikel dialect) who consistently produce excellent quality coffee - Phil & Sebastian have been sourcing from them since 2021 and have been loving the coffees year after year. The farms sit at enviable elevations ranging from 1550 - 1850m, resulting in this smooth daily-drinker you need in your life.
These small-holder farmers provide cherry (coffee fruit) to Bella Vista, in Antigua, where the coffee is then wet milled. Small producers often struggle to reach a wider market due to their size, but Bella Vista brings their efforts together into something greater by blending the coffees together. Bella Vista gets the coffee cherry through two reps who go to the same villages yearly and bring cherry from the small holders of that village back to Antigua. These reps are very important in the chain as they calibrate the day to day quality and ensure that Bella Vista’s high expectations of coffee quality are being met. We can’t speak to their musical chops, but they’re rockstars in their own right.
From farm to tour to green rooms backstage, this coffee’s journey is driven by passion and precision. It’s a blend of craft, care, and commitment — the perfect companion for the road ahead. Enjoy.
