About

Phil Robertson and Sebastian Sztabzyb worked as engineers in the wireless industry before realizing that their true passions lay in coffee. Phil, after immersing himself in the coffee community in Vancouver, partnered with Sebastian to open Phil & Sebastian Coffee Company in the Calgary Farmers’ Market on March 30, 2007. It was instantly hailed as the best coffee that Calgary had ever seen and quickly grew in popularity not only in Calgary but also across Canada.

Their passion for quality and innovation in the coffee industry, along with their mutual background in the sciences, has led Phil and Sebastian to become leaders in the community. They continue to pursue excellence in all areas of their business and have recently started roasting their coffee in-house, sourcing some of the best green beans available. Phil and Sebastian regularly taste and evaluate their coffees and continually endeavor to bring out the best in each coffee they offer.

The passion and excellence that is apparent in Phil and Sebastian also comes through in the staff and team around them. Regular staff cuppings, a formal process of evaluating coffee, and information sessions ensure that everyone in the company can continue to learn and grow in terms of knowledge and ability. This year, Phil & Sebastian held its first in-house barista competition, sending the top two competitors to the Prairies Regional Barista Competition, in which Ben Put placed first.

An eagerly awaited second location is soon to open in Marda Loop, furthering Phil & Sebastian’s ever-present commitment to Calgary’s growing quality coffee community.
